Summary: Zurich, 1949. Prehistory and context of the first IPA congress after the Second World War. This paper discusses the first IPA Congress after the Holocaust and Freud’s death. It deals with several subjects: the fragile situation of the IPA after the American  »declaration of independence« in 1938 at the Paris Congress; the Pentecost meeting of European Analysts in 1947 in Amsterdam; the London Gentleman’s Agreement of 1948; the situation of the Swiss Society of Psychoanalysis which surprisingly issued the invitation to this congress in 1947; the circumstances of Leo Bartemeier’s election to the IPA presidency as successor of Ernest Jones; the program and course of the congress; and finally its aftermath which, with a delay of ten years, led to the founding of Swiss training institutes. The IPA has survived the crisis – as a different institution: with new officials, a more pluralistic outlook, and centered in the USA.
